Security camera recommendations?

Mrs. BaconSandwich and I have bought a new (to us) house. The neighborhood isn’t bad, but I still like the idea of getting some sort of security camera setup. I know such cameras have been helpful to a few people here on Oppo before, hence my asking here.

Costco has some seemingly inexpensive systems by a company called Lorex, but reviews seem... mixed. I would consider rolling my own system with a bunch of Raspberry Pi computers (using the Pi IR camera), but as a young dad of two (bacon bit #2 was born a week ago, bacon bit #1 will be 2 years old soon), I really don’t have a ton of time to muck around with making my own system.  That’s also time that takes away from other hobbies... like programming or car stuff.

So, do any of you have any recommendations on security cameras?

Ideally I’d like at least 2, possibly 3 cameras. Another concern of mine is security to the outside world - meaning I don’t want some totally sketchy knock-off Internet-of-Things camera that first sends my feed to a server in china (Exhibit A: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ).

I believe Nest (Now a subsidiary of Google) has a security cam but no idea if it is any good.

I have two of these . I like them quite a bit, it can record snippets of video and still images on movement and detection.

Very easy to set up and if you’re moderately tech savvy, you can download iSpy and control your camera on your PC

Q-See is pretty good, I have used them before. Make sure you get a full kit with a proper DVR (with a hard drive designed for continuous operation), and always go with the highest definition available. Only the HD security camera videos actually get prosecuted.

As far as I can tell most of the cheap systems are terrible when it comes to network security. If I got one of those I’d not connect it to the network, just use it as a recorder.

I’ll second q-see. They’re cheap, HD, and when you need them, they’ll work. We had a hard drive fail in one but it was easily replaced with a standard PC hard drive and we tripled the capacity in the process. Setup is simple - and even easier if you get a model with POE or put them on POE injectors.

It looks like they do have one. $250, but I would hope with it being a Google subsidiary, they’d at least do security right.

I wonder how something like this would work: http://www.costco.ca/Q-See-8-channel-DVR-Surveillance-System-with-2-TB-HDD-and-4-1080p-Bullet-Cameras.product.100240318.html

Will probably work just fine, the prices on the Q-See website are not indicative of the real world.

I’m guessing it ties in with all their other home automation stuff, it probably lives on your network and backs itself up to Drive. I just looked and they have an indoor and outdoor version.
